Pinoy PLU Signal: Apathetic to Basketball

Basketball is so freaking popular in the Philippines that practically every barangay has its own basketball court and every village its own summer liga (league). And one thing I’ve noticed is that almost every PLU friend I know is not into basketball outside of UAAP/NCAA and NBA. If any gay guy is interested at all, then it would likely be because of the hunky cagers, especially those that have crossed over into showbiz or modeling like Ram Sagad, Bruce Quebral, Chris Tiu, Simon Atkins, JC Tiuseco, Derick Hubalde, and Marx Topacio.

I have no idea why gay people, in general, are not into basketball as much as straight guys. I don’t think it’s because gay guys are not into sports. One reason I can think is that basketball is a contact sport (unlike, say, volleyball or badminton) and because of that, established basketball teams will likely shun gay players who are out especially in this still-homophobic country like ours. Also, I think that closeted potential players would likely find the physical contact in the game too much for comfort. Of course I’m just speculating here and I would certainly appreciate any ideas.

I’ll just leave you with this funny local Sunkist commercial (that you already ought to have seen) about a closeted MVP cager unmasked by a iced tea drink / truth serum. It also helps that the MVP’s two teammates here are very yummy. :-)

i hate basketball of all the sports because i find the players and fans are very arrogant. puro yabang lang lalo na dito sa pilipinas. nagpupumilit tyo sa basketball pero puro pandak naman at puro yabang lang. isa sa reason yan kaya ganito ka miserable ang pilipinas, the basketball mentality na pwedeng mag foul hanggat di nahuhuli at ang isa ay ang jeepney. another expalanation to hehehe. kahit yung crush ko na adik sa basketball di ko sya makasundo pag basketball ang topic. khit super pogi pa sya. i got my pride heheh

So true. I am extremely apathetic to basketball. Haven't touched a basketball since grade school. Never liked the sport. I do like UAAP, but that's just school spirit, i guess. (YEY, UAAP season's started again!)

My personal experience actually supports your theory. I only play tennis and swim laps. Perhaps I so have an aversion to contact sports.haha

Anon (1st), well, you've chosen to comment almost anonymously, and I've chosen to blog pseudonymously. Ultimately, does it really matter to this blog if I share my profile or not? The credibility of this blog lies in the content and less so on the author. But to answer your question, I work in the technology industry, but not in the BPO sector. :-)

Anon (2nd), I agree that basketball in this country has become too commercialized and people too obsessive. But I don't agree that height really matters that much. The Philippine basketball team has won bronze in the 1954 World FIBA championship and has won several golds in the Asian championships. So, may laban naman tayo kahit papaano. :-)

ML, thanks for confirming! So, which UAAP team are you rooting for? ;-)

Are you rooting for any particular team?

ML, nope. I guess I wasn't imbibed with any athletic school spirit. Hehehe.

I do muay thai, which is more of a contact sport than basketball. No discomfort there. When playing sports, you have to be very asexual to maintain focus. ^_^

Anon, well in martial arts, since these are one-on-one, you really can't afford to get distracted one tiny bit. :-)
